Are laptop CD/DVD drives interchangeable?

My friend's Compaq Presario 2500 laptop (Pentium 4) has a dead CD drive. Can I just pick up any laptop sized CD/DVD drive from Geeks.com or whatever or is there some proprietary issues?
 
Most of the time (not always), the "standard" slim notebook optical drives do fit, but the bezel (exterior) is not standard, so be aware you may be stuck with a missing bezel if you cannot get the bezel onto the replacement drive.
