Are laptop burners brand specific?

Will this Sony DVD Burnerfit in a Toshiba laptop?

EDIT...Got this info from a member:
The DVD burners are generic as long as you match it with SATA or EIDE depending on which form your laptop is. You'll have to remove the faceplate though from your old drive and put it on your new one most likely though if it doesn't want to fit. You're better off looking in your device manager and trying to match the drive.

AFAIK all laptop burners are the same size. The differences are the interface (IDE, SATA), and front bezel. Adaptors on the old unit ( caddy, plug adaptors), will swap with the new drive.

Generally an easy swap if the front bezels match.

They are not brand specific, but in many cases, they are form factor specific. Each OEM has a different carrier or caddy. The Thinkpads have a modular carrier that fits in what they call "Ultrabay." As long as the optical drive itself can fit in the carrier and make the electrical connection, they are good to go.

Ultrabay
