are judges elected or appointed?

Supreme court judges are appointed, while state's trial courts' are elected. but my teacher said even though they are elected, in reality they are appointed. and then to top off my confusion he said "yeah, you are smart enough to understand why." Just so that I could uphold my pretentious intelligence, I didn't asked him to clarify. so now I am confused and in need of schooling from you guys. 🙂

Federal judges are appointed. Who cares about the rest of them, just people who couldn't make it as lawyers.

perhaps he is referring to what happens in many judicial elections, only one candidate is on the ballot, so even though the judge is "elected" , it isn't like there was a choice

maybe?

i have seen many times where the judges on the ballot are unopposed
