What is fun without danger? We would soon find out. In the year 1988, the Consumer Product Safety Commision banned yard darts, making them illegal to sell or even play in the United States. You can be arrested for selling or even playing the game. Why you ask? Because between 1978 and 1987, 6,700 lawn dart related injuries, three-fourths of which were sustained by children and only God knows how many dogs and cats lost lives to these steel tipped daggers of death. Personally, it sounds like some parents needed to put down the beer can and watch what the kids were up to, but as usual, people can't be held accountable and the easiest thing to do was to ban the game.

Have fun and try not to make a dog-kabob out of the family mutt.

Yeah they were! I wonder if my parents still have theirs. I'll have to ask and if so take them for safe keeping.

They have been off the shelves for many years.

Intersting. I didn't know they were banned. I think my grandma still has a set of these.

Correct. You can still play them. I've still got 2 old sets and use them frequently. They're a summertime tradition in my family going back at least 30 years. Every single picnic the jarts are brought out, every single picnic they're used constantly and every single picnic we manage to avoid skewering anyone with them. Amazing how safe things can be if you exercise a little common sense when using them.
