Well, just got this laptop from Dell... and the HDD is IBM.

Is this good, is this bad, or is this horrible?

I am asking this coz i have heard that IBM Desktop drives just suck(Deathstars...).... and are totally unreliable. Is the case same with notebooks hdds as well??

The Hdd details are "Hard Drive, 60GB, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 9.5MM, 4.2K, IBM-MRGA"

I know its a slow 4200 rpm drive... i just wanna know if its reliable....

I have taken 2 yrs warranty.. that includes the HDD right?

IBMs are usually pretty reliable. I've still got 2 30GB IBM drive chugging along. IBM sold their hdd business to Hitachi though.

Yes IBM HD's are some of the best
As for the Deathstar they have 1 bad series and they will never hear the end of it.

quote corrected 😉

How quiet are they? Dell is sending me a new IBM as a replacement for my busted HDD in my laptop so I am hoping it doesn't make whiny noises... 🙁

maybe i just had back luck but i had 2 ibm drives go bad in my former dell laptop, and both were rather noisy, but that was close to 2 years ago and quality could of changed since then.

I've found Hitachi/IBM drives to be slightly quieter than Toshiba or Fujitsu drives. Most notebook drives are barely audible at idle anyway.

IBM's are fine. Every brand has it's bad series of drive. I have seen a lot of IBM DARA series bite the "pixie" dust (haha, I crack myself up). Hitachi's DK23CA drives were unreliable, and I have seen a lot of problems with the Toshiba MK4019GAX and MK6021GAS drives, but that could also be due to the design of the particular laptop that places them between the CPU and VGA card. Toshiba's MK1214GAP also failed quite a bit and IBM's DJSA series would start to get loud after 1.5-2 years. Toshiba's GAS series have seemed to be pretty good as have the Hitachi DK23EA series. I myself have always found all Toshiba drives to be quieter or equal to their IBM counterparts. I have also generally disliked all Hitachi drives, but the 40GB and higher seem to be better. IBM drives have seeme to be pretty reliable and quite since they switched to the ICN numbering scheme.
