Are HP computers compatible with different motherboards?

I bought a new motherboard and now my hard drive won't boot. it keeps giving me this message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause". It gives me two options "Launch start repair" and "Start Windows normally" neither work. Then I tried a system recovery and it said something about the recovery disks not being able to work on this computer.
I've upgraded everything except for the hard drive... so I think that's where the problem is? Is my only option to get a new OS?

Actually, that's pretty common. Windows is looking for the old motherboard and drivers. It's VERY common to have to reinstall Windows after you change your motherboard...especially if you change to a board with a different chipset, or more major changes like CPU and RAM.

Your recovery disks probably won't work. You're no longer using HP hardware.

You windows software was locked down to your old MOBO, you could try speaking to microsoft or get your wallet out and get a new windows key
