Nothing cheaper than The Jane -

not disgusting - just very small rooms - well kept - awesome bar/club area.

You can also use Hotwire for cheaper rates.

If you are staying downtown, don't forget the nightly downtown tax they throw on top of that!

When I went, I found a hotel in Queens for a very reasonable rate. 30 minute subway ride to Manhattan.

That price sounds pretty normal for manhattan. I usually stay close to central park as it is right smack in the middle of where I usually tour for foodings (the only reasons why I go to NYC on a whim). I've had to eat that amount several times when I went to NYC on a whim. Luckily, I had a couple roommates to help make the journey more affordable.

If you search, you can find deals. Prices are probably more expensive this time of year, but I've never paid over $150/night when I go in August.

Use the InterContinental Hotel Group's Friends and Family discount. I used this the first time I went to NYC and had no trouble.

Use Priceline and name your price. You can get a decent 3star hotel for under $150 a night
