Are home DVD players supposed to stutter??

Just got a home DVD player and I have a question. When watching a movie at one point in the movie the frame seems to stutter. The picture is still clear, it just stops for a second and then keeps going as normal. I have narrowed the problem down to one thing. The stutter happens when the DVD player changes layers on a DVD. I just watched Traffic and precisely when the DVD player goes from layer "0" to layer "1" I noticed the stutter.

Is this normal and do all DVD players do this?? I'd appreciate any input.

Yep, layer changes are completely normal...just some DVDs have them at places better than others (ideal spot would be a fade to black when there's no sound). Some players do the layer changes quicker than others as well.

The DVD player I bought can display all kinds of stuff through the on screen menus. It has a graphic that shows a disc with an arrow that moves from layer 0 to layer1. It also displayes the bit rate the DVD was encoded at and a whole bunch more I'm still learning.
