Are HEPA Filter air purifiers any good?

hepa is no hype. it works. find consumer reports at the library or use their onine site to find the best filter.

Don't use this stuff unless absolutely necessary, as breathing too much filtered air weakens your immune system

😕

It is probably much better for your health to not breathe in dust than to worry about weakening the immune system.

This is not true. However, it has been show that children exposed to air filtration systems in houses during early childhood does increase the risk of asthma when they get older.

Hepa filters are well worth the extra money. The do filter out allergens and smoke very effectively. If you have allergies, it is highly recommended to get one. The sharper image thing is a POS.

all this information is from a grand rounds talk we had a few weeks ago by an allergist doctor.

People that live in ultra sanitary conditions all their lives are much more vulnerable to bacteria and virii. The only reason you'd ever really need/want such an air filter would, for say, a small child/infant with some kind of extreme allergy to dust/pet dander/etc. Otherwise you're just making yourself more likely to pick up the common cold everytime you step outside your house.

Yeah, so don't live in a bubble. Unless you never leave the room with the filter, it's simply not an issue. I keep one running in my room 24/7 just to keep the dust and smell of smoke down (my roommate smokes), but the rest of the house I don't bother with. It helps me sleep better at night, I wake up less congested than I normally would (less dust), so it's well worth it. As far as my immune system being weakened by less dust being in the air, I'll just drink some more OJ.

Well ya, general use, for adults specifically, you're not going to change your immune system probably. The biggest concern would be with developing children. I guess I kind of looked at it as the primary owners being "neat freaks" in general. The kind of people who have to to sanitize everything in their house and wash their hands with anti-bacterial soap just cause they pet the dog once. Then they get sick and they figured they just didn't clean enough. It's a vicious cycle.

Is your HEPA air filter/purifier noisy?

^

I bought the Holmes Air Purifier Tower ($60 walmart), with Arm & Hammer & activated charcoal filters... (Filters are $25 a pack, replace every 3 months) I noticed a distinct difference in my room in just 24 hours of continuous operation. Its quiet enough to sleep while running, (and its only 3 feet from me.) 3 year mfr warranty.

I also saw a GE Air Purifier Tower with permafilter ($140). It has a cloth filter that you vacuum, so there is no buying replacement filters. The only downside is there is no activated charcoal for odor removal. 5 yr mfr warranty.

they work better than the "ionic breeze" one.

Well, it depends on what you want to accomplish.

I had an Ionic Breeze - did it do a great job of cleaning the air? Not really. It did accumulate a lot of particles, especially sooty stuff, but nothing like hair and dust. BUT, it did neutralize all odors in the air which made it invaluable since we have a cat and dog.

The HEPA filters are great for purifying the air but don't do much for odors. An additional charcoal filter helps a little with odor but gets saturated quickly.

First off the word is viruses, not virii. Virii is a made up term by computer users. Secondly, while I condone exposure so that one's immune system has been properly conditioned I suggest you do some reading on respiratory development of children. And just why would filtered air cause someone to be more likely to "catch" a cold when they step outside their house?

How did the Ionic Breeze 'neutralize' odors? Does it have a charcoal filter?

No charcoal filter.

It ionizes the air and uses polarity to push air through plates. Ionized particles cling to the plates. "Odor", or smell, is just our ability to distinguish different molecules. So remove the particles and the odor is gone.

Most modern air purifiers with replaceable HEPA + charcoal filters also have an ionizer feature that can be turned off.

True, I had one.

But the filters were expensive and didn't last long. Also, they do ionize the air... but they didn't have any static plates to collect ionized particles. So its kind of a silly feature when you think about it.

works good in my place, takes all the dust out of the air. I have the Honeywell unit

I have the same one too. It seems to be working, theres a funny smell in the air. Plus I have a dog.

hepa filters are very good. especially for people with allergies.

if you have cats get one for sure. the ionic breeze doesnt work. ozone machines do work for pollutants in the air but ozone is will also speed up the deterioration
of rubber products like 100 fold, anything made of foam or rubber. for instance, your vcr belts.

having the dust filtered out of your air wont hurt you. saying you need dust and airborn particles in your lungs for your immune system is like saying smoking will put hair on your chest.
