Are generic batteries any good?

Friend's lenovo battery bit the dust and he needs a replacement. Generic batteries are 3x cheaper than the OEM version. Are there any actual differences in quality or is it just branding?

Some are good and some are not. Not much of an answer I know.

I buy third-party laptop batteries all the time -- keep the paperwork and note the warranty period.

that is right when i got first battery it lasted for 3 days i got replacement under 90 days warranty it has been working for 4 years now.

Some are ok, but try not to buy batteries from overseas eBay sellers - it will only give you headache. I got an extended batt for my Lenovo S10 from a Chinese seller and it came DOA after waiting for it for nearly three weeks.
