Are Gaming Cafe's a good idea or not, and why?

Im doing other research, but just want your opinions. Im in Lubbock, Tx (200,000 /ppl but also a college town) and there are three here, supposedly doing good. I am thinking about opening up one in another city that does not currently have one. I also plan on using the space to build & fix computers as well as sell misc merchandise.

How would a business like this do with a coffee/cappuccino shop as well?
Can you give me what GCs in your area charge... etc? Any info is helpful.
What is the avg. rent for commercial space in your area?
What kind of rules are enforced? ( I would like to be pretty strict).
What games or usually offered?

Please if you flame, say why!

coffee/cappuccino just means more crap to spell on the keyboards

in SoCal it's 2-3 bucks an hour, but the market is pretty glutted = monopolistic competition

it costs a lot to start up the center, and unless you have major business, you won't be able to recoup your initial expenditure.

The coffee shop would be separate from the computers etc, more like a lounge /TV area for the coffee shop.

I don't know if I would recommend doing this, its expensive and can be a annoying dealing with the people who come to these types of establishments. Your prices per hour will prob range from 1-3(1 usually only during special times) which is the average around so cal. Do NOT think that all of your computers will be used all day because that will be far from the truth. It will most likely be in bursts where in the morning and early afternoon its slow and gets busy later. Some costs you have to consider are:
computers + upgrades every few years
renovation to the building to accomodate the computers
internet
software
I helped set up a pc "bang" before, I didn't have anything to do with the finances just set up the comps, but when I was talking to them about the costs some of the main things that popped up were the renovation and the comps. The renovation will be expensive because you are going to need to create place where you can have 40+ comps(or how ever many you want). Even if you lease the comps you are still talking about a lot of money for 40+ comps. I don't know how much they got charged for building rental. Games are going to be expensive because imagine having to buy 40+ copies of certain software, like 40 cs, 40 sc, etc... you don't have to buy 40+ pieces of each software though. You can put bf1942 on comps 1-20 and wc3 on comps 21-40, or something like that. You are going to have to have at least a t1 connection and those are 1k a month I believe. So adding all of these up = A LOT ;)

If you do go with this, I highly recommend you run win 2000 on the machines becasue of its stability + administrative features. The place I help set up uses 2000 and they prefer it over xp. Things WILL be broken so have a spares of all the hardware.

Try to have get your cafe in a place that has security guards or have some big guys because fights do break out at these places. Geeks are not the ones that generally go to these places. More like wannabe gangsters who are geeks at heart go to these places.

For rules just use the general rules like no fighting and arguing inside the cafe. If you get a cd key banned you pay for the software. If you break keyboard/mouse/monitor/speaker/computer you pay for it.

Games the main one is of course cs. Everytime I have gone to a pc bang most of the people are playing cs, there are a some people playing starcraft, and even less playing wc3 or battlefield. It might be different at your location though.

Remember you want people to stay there as long as possible so you can make money off of food and drinks.

Hope this helps out, good luck.

Let's not forget about the licenses, insurance, etc.

And the electricity bills for the appliances, computers, monitors and air conditioning/heating ...

I'm sure that keeping 40 PC's cool during the hot summer months will NOT be cheap.
