Are front license plates necessary anymore?

I mean, really, do we really need to have a plate in the back AND front? A lot of modern cars don't even consider space for them based on their designs. And why poke holes in a perfectly new bumper? Why? Add soon as you put a front plate on a car, any car, its value is diminished by at least 35%. True story.

If I were king, I'd ban license plates on front of the cars.

They're bullshit. They used to only serve the purpose wasting money. Now they not only waste money, but allow the government to track the population.

Not having one here gives cops a reason to pull someone over and gain possible revenue from a citation.

It's good evidence in hit and runs. CSI can zoom and enhance the imprint left in the struck object, or just pick it up off the ground.

Just depends, FL doesn't have em, so I haven't in 25 years now.

I used to in Hawaii years ago, I do not believe Indiana had them ever.

I don't know the answer to the OP's question, but there certainly does seem to be a pattern. Offhand, I'd say that only a small percentage of the residents in the one-plate-states would be mentally capable of mounting a second plate.

Interesting.
Since the only states that seem to require front plates are state where sex with your relatives seems to be common place, yes, front plates should be required.

I haven't put mine on. When I bought my Challenger they had the front license plate mounting kit in the trunk. If I get pulled over I just play dumb. It happened once and I got off with a warning, but he didn't write anything down so that never happened as far as I'm concerned.

Ha, Ohio is surrounded.

Damn you Ohio, just give in to those around you. I hate front plates.

Come to think of it ... When I bought my current car, I think I drove around for three or four years without the front license plate. Out of sheer laziness. Or, maybe I was too dumb to figure out how to mount it. :)

In the Canadian provinces and territories of Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon, licence plates are currently only required on the rear of the vehicle. The remaining provinces, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Ontario, require the licence plates to be mounted on both the front and rear of the vehicle.

it's even more stupid in canada.

about 70 percent of canada it's rear only.

i would love not to need a front plate. it's not even necessary and serves no point.

Here in California, I don't have a front plate. I'll take a fixit ticket every 10 years or so over getting popped by a red-light camera.

You've never received a red light ticket then as they take pics from the rear too.

Wait, so those do come off the books?

I had my car with no front plate for years in SoCal, no problems. I moved to MidCal and for there years no problems either, until 2 years ago I parked in front of the ferry building. Some overzealous meter maid decided to give me a ticket for no front plate. Bastage!

So if I take it off again, do I pay full fees for the ticket, or is there a drop off period?

Police like them because they provide a nice flat surface to bounce their radar/lidar off. Yay!

Best solution I've found is a tinted plate-cover - but that's not legal apparently. I've been told to take mine off by a nice officer.

I did not know some states were ok with a missing front plate.

when i worked in toledo, i had coworkers who would live in MI so they could register their cars in MI so they could just use the front plates

i tried to explain that it wasnt worth paying double the car insurance costs to live in MI vs OH, but they would have none of it

It's just a way for the state to get more money out of people, like state inspections. And as for the people that just ignore having it, well thats fine and dandy but I drive way too much for work to ignore it.

I don't put the front plate on my summer car, was good for 3 years until last summer I got a ticket for it. Paid the $150 no front plate tax, and it still isn't on. I figure it could be a ticket a cop could give me if I get pulled over for speeding and he feels like being nice...

The front license plate adds a little bit more protection if you are in a head on collision!!

I wish Ohio would drop the front plate. I don't care on my daily driver, but a front plate on my Camaro is just annoying. It really doesn't look like it belongs anywhere. Sigh.

I know some countries like Indonesia require front plates on motorcycles, but do any states? Never seen a front plate on a motorcycle here.
