as a matter of fact i did, looking through my collection of ribbon cables, i found out that they are all the same width, does that mean that they are all ide cables? whats the difference?

They're not the same width. floppies have 34 pins, IDE cables have 40. Try plugging a floppy cable into an IDE drive.
