are firewire plugs necessary?

FireWire is faster and normally uses less CPU cycles compared to USB 2.0. If I had the choice, I'd take FW over USB 2.0 any time.

USB2 is more accepted as far as I know, since most computer new computers have USB2 and few have firewire, I got both so it don't make a difference to me i guess

While technically, USB 2.0 is faster at 480Mbps versus 400Mbps for FireWire. FireWire controllers don't involve the CPU for data transfers nearly as much as USB does. FireWire also sustains transfer speeds much closer to its max speed.

USB 2.0 while technically able to transfer approx 60MB per second. Usually only sustains about 25-35MB/sec. FireWire on the otherhand, while techincally it can transfer up to 50MB/sec, while it can in practice sustain 40-45MB/sec.

IT depends on if you need it or not. Firewire cards are cheap, If you end up needing it get one.

It is great for cam corders, better than USB 2.0. I am buying a digital cam corder so I need it.

Only YOU can know if its important to you.

DUH

For me, it's absolute necessary. For others, maybe not.

I don't think it hurts to get it though, since it adds, what, $5-25 to the cost of the system?
