Are file downloads a strain on a server?

Don't want to loose my cheap hosting account. They say that activity that will use more than 1% of servers resources may result in a suspended account.

If I have a 4 meg file that I want to serve (legal) and I don't mind using my 4000 meg bandwidth allotment, will posting access to the file where alot of people will probably download it in a short amount of time cause an unacceptable condition?

I rarely use my 4 gig allottment, and was curious about that. Ususally I only transfer 100 megs a month.

I'm asking here cause I am not likely to get an answer from their suppot unfortuantly. . .

That sound to me "Silly" how could some one know what is going on their server.

Ask them for a specific list of how you might over load their server.

Most likely it is design to prevent use of web-based chat programs. I've heard of those downing entire servers thanks to the CPU overhead. My host (http://www.surpasshosting.com/) doesn't allow them either.

JackMDS: They're called logs. If 80% of the CPU load is going to one account's processes, there's obviously something bad going on.

Unfortunately I did not word my post correctly.

I meant how I as a customer should Know the condition of the CPU on "THIER" meaning the Hosting service computers.
