Are faster than g (108 Mb/sec) setups worth it?

I am trying to decide if the upgraded wireless g setups are really worth the extra cost. D-Link has one they call SuperG and Linksys calls theirs Speedbooster. If my cable modem isn't running above 54 Mb/sec wouldn't they just be a waste of $?

Newegg has the Linksys WRT54G on sale today. I am thinking about getting it if the faster version WRT54GS isn't going to do anything for me.

For browsing the web it's useless. FOr transferring large files between computers on the same network it can be useful.

Speedbooster is different than SuperG and XtremeG.

Speedbooster does not use multiple channels for transmission like SuperG and XtremeG do. Believe it or not, this is a good thing. It still achieves some improvement without using multiple channels, which could reak havoc on any nearby wireless networks.

Also check out U.S. Robotics products (if you can find any :p ) I know that they have 120Mbps over one channel.

Basically, the point of all of this concerns the fact that signal quality degrades over distance and through obstacles. The better the signal and the farther the reach, the better the chances for achieving the highest thoroughput anywhere in the device's range.

Keep in mind, it may say 54Mbps o nthe box, but there is [practially] no way you'll achieve that [theoretical] speed.

Yeah, like transfering 13GB DV tapes over wireless....I gave up with my WLAN for such tasks. Now I jsut use a portable HD....:|

Well it's still going to take forever.. But it will be faster than a B network. heh.

I too would just pull the hard drive or something.

Still, assume 16Mbps, or 2MB/s, it would still be within reason, but at 25ft vertically and trhough 3 stories, I get about 3Mb/s:(......Basically as fast as my cable line....

Hell, those are the speeds I used to get with my 802.11b AP that I have stashed away in a closet:(

I gave up on D-Link and their Xtreme-G just a couple days ago. I have my system and my wifes laptop here in the computer room, the wireless router just on the other side of the far wall in the bedroom, and my secondary machine two rooms down all on the same floor. Transferring files between my two systems I was topping out at 6.5Mbps. Bleh. :(
