Just something my friend is ranting about. I thought they were the same as Eclipses - imports?

Nope, they are built in America. (some Podunk, IL type town)

BUT, they are identical except for sheet metal to the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was designed by the Japanese.

So would you say a Dodge Stealth is American? They're platform twins with the Mitsubishi 3000GT, after all.

Many vehicles share platforms with other cars:

Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse
Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth
Ford Probe/Mazda MX6

As to whether Eagle is an "American" car, I do not know where they are made, but I'm quite sure they're a subsidiary of an american car company. Jeep & Eagle are both owned by the same company.

I've got a Dodge Stealth and the only thing actually done by Dodge is the air conditioner. The car even says "Manufactured by Mitsubishi Motor Company."

The Plymouth Laser was also based off of the Eclipse.

I used to own a Talon. Yes, they are manufactured in America, just like the Eclipse. The Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser were all basically the same car, just slightly different body designs and option packages. The Eclipse is the only one still being made. All three cars were manufactured at DiamondStar Motors, which is a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler--it's based in Illinois, I think. Anyways, I believe a lot of the engineering was done by Mitsubishi, but I'm sure Chrysler had input as well. In my opinion, the Eagle Talon was the best of the three when they were still making them. It had the best look to it--that's why I bought it over the Eclipse. So, the answer is really that the Talon is half-Japanese, half-American, since it's a product of a joint venture.

The Mazda/Ford trucks (Navajo and B-Series, aka Explorer and Ranger) are all American. Mazda just re-badges them.

The Eclipse/Laser/Talon were made at Diamond Star Motor in Normal, Illinois. The design was pure Mitsubishi but was assembled domestically.
