Are DURON 1.6 compatible with SDRAM-based VIA chipsets?

I'm wondering if these chips would work on the older pre-DDR SDRAM chipsets by VIA. Palomino, TBird, and Duron 1.3 or lower processors were compatible. It would be nice if someone could clarify their compatibility. :)

as long as it is socket A it should work
the bios might not display it's name properly or set it's clock speed right but other than that it should work fine

if it supports pallys and tbird (266), then it should since the applebreds are now 266bus. all you need is a bios update.
that is what it says for bios update on my km400 for new duron chips

Since the new durons are based on a T-Bred, if the board has no issues w/ T-Breds then it should be ok. Having said that, I guess it really depends on what kind of SDRAM board you'll be using. IWill KK-266, for example, is based on a KT133A chipset but can not run anything higher than a regular T-Bird (most palominos are also ok but occasionally have cold boot issues while no T-Breds are possible). Not all KT133A chipset boards have this problem though. Also there are some KT266A based boards that can not run any T-Breds (especially the ones that have both SDRAM and DDR slots).

If its not SDRAM (i.e. KT133-compatible, etc...) then I think its entirely misleading for AMD to advertise them as Durons if they aren't compatible to the original Duron spec! I'd like to see someone try it before giving up hope. The other option is Athlon MP. :p

why bother with a $30 Duron + ancient SDRAM system when you can pick up a 1800+ T-bird and K7S5A Pro for $60 at fry's. the extra $30 buys you a much faster chip and a SDRAM/DDR board with 6 channel sound and USB 2.0. come on, i'm all for going cheap but not THAT cheap.

Remember that we don't all live near a Fry's. In fact, some of us are over a thousand miles from the closest Fry's...
