Are Dual P3-850s faster than one P4 1.7?

Doubtful.. Maybe dual 933's or something with a faster BUS speed.

I am not basing that on education, just a guess.. I am really not sure, I'd be curious to know too!

heck no. im about equal to a 1.2 tualatin in comparison whetstone and such. i can do more stuff though. =)

In the VAST majority of applications, including multithreaded applications they are slower. There may well be a few small specific applications in which they would be faster in though.

But in general, even in SMP optimized apps, the single P4 would win out.

From what I've seen, the P4 would be better at serial task switching. When background loads are applied the dual system does better. In 3D rendering, the dual system dominates the single chip system. I would imagine that for server side database functions you would see this as well. The comparison I saw implemented 2 P3 1GHz vs P4 1.5 GHz.

In looking at Lightwave benchmarks it looks like dual 850 would loose to the P4 ( LW 5.6 on P3, LW 6 on P4).
