Are dual layer and DVD9 DVDs 8.5 gigs or 9.4 gigs?

The new dual layer discs that will be coming out will have a capacity of 8.5 gigs. I keep hearing how a real DVD9 is 9.4 gigs. I then read somewhere that double sided DVDs are 9.4 gigs whereas dual layered DVDs are 8.5.

So what is the truth? Anyone know?

i believ eur right. dual layer does not have the same amount of hold space as a double sided DVD due to its nature.

Dual Layer are 8.5 { 4.7 + 3.5 = 8.5 }
Dual Sided are 9.4 { 4.7 + 4.7 = 9.4 }
Dual Both = 17 gig but aren't used to much cause of the cost of cementing two disc together.

It turned out to be 8.5 but that's decimal.
Cds use the binary number system so a 700MB cd will actually hold 700MBs of data.
A 4.7GB DVD will only hold 4.38 GB of data, however, because it uses the decimal number system like hard drives and flash memory.
Likewise, a 8.5GB will hold accoringly less but I'm too lazy to do the math right now :p

Read what nightcrawler said. :p

And then realize that those are decimal numbers and thus innacurate. The actual ammount is 7.916GB.

Actually they are accurate they're just measured in metric instead of binary, just a marketing ploy to make it look like people are going to get more space then they are.

Yes, this has already been covered a few times.
They're not accurate to the ammount of data you can actually put on them. Unless you have some kind of freak computer that measures data in metric....
