Are Dual 9800GTX+s in SLI ideal for a 1920x1200 resolution screen?

After doing some research regarding Nvidia cards I came to notice that the 9800GTX+ SLI setup performs on top overall for price/performance over the GTX280 and GTX260 SLI setups even though the 280 performs with only 5-10fps more and when it came to the 260, both the 260 and 9800GTX+ SLI setups, performed almost equally with most benchmarks and even other benchmarks the 260 SLI setup ranked below the 9800GTX+ SLI setup by an average of 3-5fps (all info gathered from looking a alot of videocard benchmark/fgs charts)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that a pair of 9800GTX+s are most ideal for a 1920x1200 resolution screen, am I somewhat correct?

If so having a 260/280 SLI setup is obviously a waste of money when it comes down to running them on a 1920x1200 resolution screen and when we talk about price/performance ratio. For this wouldn't a 9800GTX+ SLI setup be worthwhile till the next generation cards come out around April-July of next year?

It just strikes me odd that the new cards that are out now, are a figure of illumination, the names are just for show and the prices are just nonsense. Heck you gain little with the new cards in a 2560x1600, theirs no point to it.

Thats just my opinion:)

I left out the 9800GX2 since running a pair in SLI (quad SLI) would result in even lower gains. And if I had to add about ATI's CF setup with 2 HD4870s, I noticed that in a couple of benchmarks regarding fps, it overcame any Nvidia SLI setup, but with many other benchmarks it ranked equal with the 9800GTX+ SLI setup, with other charts showing it even performed lower.
