Are DSL modems "universal?"

Verizon is dumb and sent me a modem I didn't need and couldn't use (long story.)

In any case, it's a Westell dsl modem. I will be moving to an area with SBC DSL. Will the modem be compatible with the new ISP or do I have to get a different one?

Not necessarily. I had a fujitsu for my original verizon dsl account. During the summer I moved to a new place and wanted to continue with verizon. However, my old fujitsu would not work there since it was a different version or some crap like that.

The modem has to be compatible with the DSLAM at your phone companies switchyard. Some just won't work together, others will just connect without a problem.
