Well, i'm new to having a house, and so far I've been visited by 3 (THREE!) door to door people. Latest one was 2 mins ago, her name was "Zirma" and she was a foreign exchange student selling books ranging from cooking to God. I told her straight off that I didn't have cash, yet she persisted and tried to sell me a little book for only "pocketchange".

No sir, I don't like em!

No. The last salesman we got here was selling meat (yeah, that's right) six years ago. He thought he was going to be eaten alive by jake. Nothing since that.

This summer I've had people at my door:

a) Selling steaks, miracle cleaner, coupon books, candy, magazines, home improvement, and lawn services

b) Petitioning against drilling for oil in the great lakes

c) Collecting cans for the deposit money

Nope...used to get the odd jehovah, but no salesmen (unless girl scouts selling those tasty cookies counts)

since our house (and neighborhood really) were built less than 8 months ago, we get them all the time. we hang up a "no solicitors" sign and we still get their trash left hanging on our door.

I get people from the local churches on occasion. House density isn't good enough to support door to door sales.

One bonus to having a neighborhood full of crotchety, possessive old people: Neighborhood Watch & strong petitioning power.
All solicitors must apply to have a permit with the city, and it's good for 1 year. Every time a solicitor gets his "wings" so to speak it's announced in the monthly Neighborhood Watch newsletter so people know to avoid them. :)
