Are digicams affected by magnets?

Just wondering how close I could get to some powerful magnets without affecting the camera - you know, wiping the memory and stuff.

How well do digicams hold up to external magnetic fields? Maybe a few k gauss, up to perhaps 30k gauss.

I've got a rebel, if anyone's got any specific info.

Well, I rather carelessly walked past the magnet with my watch on - my watch promptly stopped.

Now, this may be coincidence, as it has probably just run out of batteries. But, I'm not sure I want to test my favorite camera.

Usually such powerful magnets have warnings and such and a boundry of tape around them letting you know how close is too close (i.e. do not step over the line with metal objects, credit cards or pacemakers)

If you obey the signs and maybe stand back just a little further away you will be fine. They have magnets where I work and peoples ID badges have been wiped out from getting too close. Worst that will happen is you will lose any pictures you have.
