It's on Dell's 10 days of deals for us Canadians today, and I'm just wondering if these things are any good?

Can you use them as an external hdd like you can w/ the ipod?

Basically: should I go for this or an iPOD?

stay away from dell dj like the plague.
they are not as good as the ipod, you can look into a creative zen touch or iriver h320 or 340.

I'm a bit cuious too. The 20GB Ipod goes for $350cdn. $100 more than the Dell DJ that's 10gb's bigger.

That's exactly why I picked up a Dell DJ. They do essentially the same thing. The only difference is Apple's Music store and the propietary format they use. The DJ can play WMV though. Oh, there's also the interface but I've used my friend's iPod and I don't find the iPod interface such an overwhelming experience that I'd be willing to spend another $100.

If you want a player that can play formats like ogg, I think the Archos and a couple of others play that.

I've had one for about 2 1/2 years, I absolutely love, though its at the end of its life. I've even dropped the sucker on steel weights and concrete and it still kept on ticking.

My bro's Ipod on the other hand has gone through several returns, so i think i'll be staying away from Ipod for the time being.

I've had my 20gb DJ since January and love it. The DJ's use pretty much the exact same firmwire (at least the 2nd and 1st generation ones like mine do, not sure about the newer ones) as the Creative players, so there's alot of similarities there.

One of my biggest complains is when you are browsing by albums, only the album title is listed and in alphabetical order. It kinda makes it hard to distinguish between vague titles of 100+ albums. So, I just rename the MP3s of full albums once they are on the player so that they are listed in alphabetical order.

For example, assume I have the following three albums on my player

Pearl Jam - One
Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone
Staind - Chapter V
The Alkaline Trio - Crimson

If the ID3 tags are correct for all MP3s, then they would display like this when you are browsing by album:

Chapter V
Crimson
One
We Are Not Alone

So, I'll rename each album using 2 or 3 letters to indicate the artist. Using my method, the albums would then display like this (the album list sorted alphabetically by artist):

BB-We Are Not Alone
PJ-One
STD-Chapter V
TAT-Crimson
