Are Deer PSUs any good?

I'm building a PC for a friend, and I was planning to get the Antec SX630 with the Antec PSU in it. But I just saw on NewEgg.com a Cheiftec case which is the same case as the Antec SX630, but it has a 400W Deer PSU. The Cheiftec is only $50.50 plus $15 s&h. Should I get it, or should I pay $15 more and get the Antec from CompuPlus.com?

Also, can anyone tell me if the ratings on the Deer come out to a REAL 400W PSU? There's a picture of the actual side of one of these PSUs on NewEgg.com in the pictures of the case.

Thanks!

If you plan on destroying your chips and internal components in your case... Then yes they are good. :)

Other than that, Deer PSUs are known to have a very high failure rate, and you're lucky if your Deer PSU will survive for more than a few months before your smoke alarm goes off.

Wow... This isn't the first time I have heard that Deer will cause some kind of explosion. I have 2 deer 300 psu and for almost 2 years now. They still work fine and no hardware problems have occured. Maybe the later models are the deadly ones. I guess you should get something more reliable.

So where's the cheapest place to buy a 630, 635, or 630II (or maybe 660, 830, 840)?

Avoid: L&C, Deer, Skyhawk, Star, KME, KingStar, LCT.

Buy: EnerMax, Delta, PC Power & Cooling, Enhance(FKI), Antec, CWT, SPI.

edit: I just noticed the 400W deer +5.5 & +3.3 = 190W. A good 300W PSU is ~220W.

What about PowMax?

Losty, I've been using a Deer 300W on a different system for 3 years now, no problems. Maybe it *is* the more recent models.

Hmmm...are you sure? My brand new 350W Antec Dual Fan PSU that came with a 635 case I bought is rated @ 180W combined....does that suck?

I'd add
Avoid: Codegen(SP), Linkworld, Allied (which is Deer, changed name)
Buy: Compucase(HEC)

It must be one of Antec's lower end models. Their Solution Series SL250S 250W has +5V & +3.3V combined 185Watts.

Nope, it's not one of their "lower end" models, it was actually their first dual fan PSU and it came out just before the TruPower line did. It's was the standard issue in their "top of the line" SX 635 cases. Anyway, I have it running a 1.8ghz Athlon with a ton of stuff and it keeps better +5V rail readings than both of my Enermax 431W PSU's and the Antec 400W I have.

I have this PSU.. Doesn't strike me as a low end model. Also, IIRC, the amperage ratings on the individual rails is more important than max combined wattage...case in point...comparing the 350W Antec I have to the top of the line 330W TruPower.

Let's look at the individual rails...

+3.3V

350W - 20A
330W - 28A

+5v

350W - 33A
330W - 30A

+12V

350W - 15A
330W - 17A

So, basically, the 350W is pretty darned close the 330W TruPower on the +12V rail, a bit weaker on the 3.3V rail, and stronger on the +5V rail. I wouldn't call it "low end" at all... :)

Also, one other interesting comparison...

The 330W Tru Power is rated @ 310W (+5V, +3.3v, +12V) while the 350W is rated @ 323W (+5V, +3.3v, +12v)

:)

In reality, all of these ratings that we are given are not of much value. Are these the maximum loads when a single rail is tested? Can the 330W trupower provide 28A on the +3.3 and +5 rails simultaneously? Ultimately it is silmilar to the way audio maunfacturers rate their products, a $200 stereo amplifier will have the same rating as a $5000 unit; the ratings have little value. The best way to avoid any probelms is to stick with brands that have a reputation for quality, and a low RMA rate.

couldnt have explained it better especially in a first reply. Ive personally had a couple blow up near my face while testing a system. If you care about your system you would spend a little more green and get something reliable.

im so glad that many of you are informed about the crappy company :) deer=sux
