There is an interesting comment in this article

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/22/us-britain-boys-boomerang-idUSTRE71L2HI20110222

Sons are more likely to pay rent, lend a hand with the housework and accept parental advice on careers and love, compared with daughters who are regarded as lazier and less likely to contribute to the household, the survey discovered.

The article goes on to talk about how males are more likely to have a job, and contribute to the household.

Yeah, but how much of this is a product of upbringing though? From what I see daughters are usually doted on far more, and its that ancient mindset that females are helpless and need to be taken care of, so of course they'll grow up contributing less if they're raised that way.

I wouldn't call it "lazier". More like consequence of old traditional values families haven't broken away from. The boys are expected to be the successful ones and the breadwinner of their own families so they are treated as such.

My daughter is lazy, but I think that's more due to age, than gender. She's more capable than most in her age group because I've always encouraged her to do things on her own. She puts a lot of time into her extracurricular activities, but needs to put more attention to school.

not in a chinese household since girls are less desired traditionally. they used to make them do hard work like hell then marry them off. chinese parents profits from the daughter's marriage since the guy has to pay over some cash.

I dunno, in school, boys were definitely lazier than girls. Boys seem to ADD more.

You might qualify as a son :p

Oh yea I forgot about that! To answer this question from my point of view as a son, hell yeah the daughters were lazy. Then again, I was pretty lazy too. Maybe this is why my mother yelled at me so much. :( Oh god, wait, now I miss having my mom yell at me. I WANT TO BE A GOOD SON MOMMY!!!!

However, as a "parent" and thinking that this thread may be directed to parents more than kids, I still cannot compare. :)

Exactly, this study has fail written all over it.

Maybe because boys learn more hands on then girls, and schools to do teach in a "hands on" style. Instead of changing the way teachers teach, they drug the kids so they can all learn the same way - which is "sit down, shut up and listen"

Nah, i think it's because boys are more focused on girls during class :p

From high school through college, it was hard as hell to concentrate sometimes.

Plus we got video games + sports and other distractions. I don't think girls had as much on their minds so it's easier to concentrate.

This article talks a lot about what 'mums' think about this and that. Maybe its a comparative advantage thing. Since statistically dad probably took off the son is more useful to mom since he can open jars, move furniture and mow lawns better than the daughter. The sons are probably on the whole lazier, but when they can be goaded into doing something its a dirty crappy task mom really didn't or wouldn't do. :p

How old are your daughters though? This seems to be about teenage and older. Like it has been mentioned, think it depends on culture too. If the daughters are treated like little princesses or are expected to do a share of the household chores.

love this part 16 percent [of parents] admitting they had thought of downsizing just to get rid of their children.

and anyone who thinks daughters are lazier than sons should google the statistics of who cares for parents/elderly family members when they become ill and disabled. Huge percentage of that is daughters. I'd post some data but I'm too lazy to look them up.

lol, well played.

I do not think that daughters are lazier then sons. Each gender plays their own role in the family, and the article just points out one of the the differences between male and female.

There have been books written and studies done that blast the shit out of our current educational system catering to the earlier learning abilities of girls now a days, more so than boys, which causes boys to be more disruptive and do worse in class. Boys need a much firmer hand during adolescence than girls do, we're more rebellious at those ages.

Guys have a sense of responsibility. Girls don't.

That's about all there is to it. The girls that DO have a sense of responsibility are the keepers...and they are FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.
