I wouldn't be connected to the net without the cross over cable connecting my switches... so my answer is yes :)

Normal cables: go from NIC to hub/switch etc.
Crossover cables: go from NIC to NIC.

That's BASICALLY the gist of it.

Somewhat off-topic but not really. Since silverpig brought up what normal and cross over cables are used for, here's a question. Which is the one that M$ is selling for the Xbox System Link Cable?

Me and my friend love hanging out with our crossover cable buddies
I would say that they are quite popular.

My crossover cables are always throwing a pool party, or having a barbeque or something. They are very popular in our neighborhood.

Ameesh - For switchs that don't have uplink ports that don't cross it over for you :) We are using Cisco switches (1 2948G, 3 x 2924). Are Cisco 7200 goes to the 2948G from there there is 3 crossover cables connecting to each 2924.

Cross over cables are used to connect for going from NIC to NIC or switch/hub/router to switch/hub/router when neither has an "uplink" port. I used a crossover cable to patch between 2 uplinks ports once.
