Are computer "geeks" generally more depressed/unhappy/cynical than "average?"

It seems to me that the level of cynicism and bitterness on these forums is extremely high compared to other (different) hobbiest forums I've visited.

Thoughts?

I think it's true for more intelligent people, it certainly is for me personally. I don't think it's true for this forum though.

I agree re: the intelligence issue, but in all honesty the level of sarcasm and kind of cannibalistic mentality that I see around here is not shared in other forums, at least nearly to the degree that it is here.

I've found that a lot of other hobbyist message boards have a different mindset about the internet, and feel they should be on their best behavior at all time and not push anyone's buttons.

You have a hobby other than computers?!? Do tell of this strange custom, I'm honestly intrigued. What is it and where can I get one?

(Not joking, I"m serious)

The mods are less strict here then at other forums, and there are a lot more teens/kids on these forums than hobby forums

Yep, and what does that say about the intelligence level here? ;)

Did you use the wrong word just so that last bit would rhyme?

Most of us have no lives. We just sit here in front of our computers. The only social contact we make is on these forums, so yes of course we are depressed and cynical. ;)

I've also found that people with brains/solid facts tend to be attacked often on this site, it can be quite frustrating especially for me when people discuss medical things/medicine etc, frustrating for me as a soon to be nurse with online access to some of the most updated and credible medical libraries in the world and then people tell me i'm wrong in the information that I post. :disgust: :|

I think it's more arrogance than anything.

Geeks tend to be smarter than the average Joe, so arrogance is higher.

They also tend to be more anti-social, so there you have it.

I don't know about others, but feel depressed and cynical sometimes. I have about average intelligence I guess.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that I try to respect other opinions and not treat people like crap because I believe what goes around comes around.

qft

I have a coworker who keeps herself purposefully ignorant of world events because, she says, they make her unhappy and depressed. Personally, I hope she doesn't vote.

Not a personal attack towards this poster, but I would like to quote this since it so eloquently sums up what I've read of several others in this thread.

If some of the people on this forum were nearly as intelligent as they think they are, they would have been smart enough to overcome their depressed/unhappy/cynical mindset and find a way to enjoy the relatively few years they have on this earth before they are dead and forgotten.

I occasionally have a vision of one of these posters seeing a little girl enjoying her icecream cone and then smacking the cone out of her hand while screaming ICECREAM SUCKS in her face in a fit of rage before having a stroke right there on the spot.

I am also surprised several people here haven't committed suicide already because they cannot stand to be the lone genius in a world of idiots.

But, I'd like to thank these same egotists for providing me with a few minutes of comedy relief every day.

both are true. I do tend to just sit infront of the computer, and I don't have much social contact, and I am smarter than the average Joe, I dunno if I'm arrogant....

Anyway I'm not really too depressed or unhapppy. I think I'm more depressed than most people, but It's not a big issue for me. I just go on living my life cycle.

Wake up
eat
take shower
eat
do homeschooling on computer (9th grade)
eat
nef on computer
eat
game on computer
eat
go to sleep
repeat

Pretty much what happens for me.

On the contrary, I wake up every day thrilled to be alive, regardless of whatever happens to be going on. Life is a great blessing, and I attempt to cherish every moment! :)
