A friend of mine told me to ask if a cheap Combo CDRW-DVD player (doesent matter speed, just price) are reliable. Are they?

I would say yes they are pretty good.

Only thing is, it will wear out quicker if your using it as a DVD player, CD Drive and Writer at same time.

Ive had my 8x writer for a few years now, my mate had his combo drive for 18 months before it finished itself.

I have seperate drives for everything.

He has a CD-Rom drive, but he´s going to use it for burning Cds (quite often) and DVD playback (occasionally).

They are reliable, and convient! Been running mine for ~1 1/2 years plus LG 12/8/32 + 8 DVD.

Yea, make sure you know which Samsung you buy. It may just have a 2MB or 8MB Cache :( The drive it self is amazing, it is extremely quiet and fast. However, their is no Mt. Rainer (sp?) support. Samsung said they would release a firmware update but I havent heard of it. I am waiting for them to release another version with Mt.Rainer and faster DVD. :D

Retail = 8mb
OEM/Bulk = 2mb

Another victim to dirty heads perhaps?

Every time someone gives me a bad CDRW that still spun up, I've been able to clean the heads and get it running. A good ole can of air and a dry type of cd-cleaning disk seems to work every time.
