Are chopsticks the dumbest thing ever?

LOL this debate keeps getting worse and worse. Is it really that hard to grasp? Hundreds of years ago, when there were no forks or spoons, somewhere in the orient, chopsticks were created so that people could grasp their food! People who use them now either think they are easier to use, which is a matter of opinion, or believe them to be traditional, just as silverware is to our western culture. So, I think it's safe to say that chopsticks were NOT picked up off the street by some, I quote you,"dumd ass".

Yes the inventor of the chop stick goes into the history books right next to the guy who invented the tooth pick and the lever.
 
I'm grew up in a chinese family in US, so I often use chopsticks, forks, knives, and spoons.
Each have their advantages for different foods.
For noodles, I prefer the chopsticks because they tend to slip down forks and I can pick up the meat/vegetables along with the noodles with chopsticks. This is a lot harder with the fork.
For steak, I use fork and knives. Chinese dishes are chopped up into small pieces so you don't have to use the knife on the table. But for western dishes, fork and knives are still ideal for the steak.
Chinese people also like to eat roasted salted peanuts as an appetizer. Instead of getting their hands greasy and salty, they use chopsticks to pick up a nut at a time. You'd have a hard time doing this with a fork.
Each utensil has their advantages for certain dishes. To say one is inferior to another is just plain ignorant. :roll:

I've never eaten peanuts as an appetizer before...

ive had peanuts before, at chinese restaurants. not common, but not unheard of either.
 
I can't use them very well myself but they still have a purpose... IMO there's no better place for chopsticks than pinning up the beautiful, long, silky, black, hair of an Asian woman. 🙂

Speaking of Asian women with beautiful hair, the movie Hero comes out on DVD tomorrow. WooHoo! 😀
 
I think the kind of food gave rise to the utensil used for eating. Unless I'm mistaken, chopsticks are said to improve the flavor of Chinese food. And to all those posting from a hole and haven't crawled out in a while, there are other countries besides China in Asia. Surely you must have heard of Japan, Pakistan, India, Korea etc. People actually eat food without any utensil in some of these places.

Doesn't it seem a lot easier to just pick of the food with your fingers than using chop sticks? chop sticks just get in my way of eating. I'm lucky if I can pickup three grains of rice with them. Fingers seem to be way more efficent and faster for shoveling food. In fact, screw the fork and knife as well. I can eat a one inch steak better with my fingers than with a fork and knife.

I think the only thing we need is a spoon for soup and jello. Other than that screw the eating utensils.
 
For pasta/noodles, yes. Forks have it all over those skinny m***********s. Now, for picking up chunks of stuff, like dumplings, shrimp, etc., chopsticks rock.

haha, thats a good one those places dont actually exist
 
let say you need to cook something while camping without any kitchen tools.. will you rather go chop some wood and make 2 sticks or make a spoon/fork from it? if you know to use chopsticks, you can do everything with it.

the point is if you can't even spend some time and effort to learn something you eat with, why dont you use your dirty asswiper hands to stuff food in ur mouth
 
My grandfather used them to hit my dad on the head when he was not eating "the right way".
Old Chinese strict on respect to olderly and also you can not cross the dish (pick something on the other side of the dish that you like)...

there you have it, and other use of chopsticks. 🙂
 
In some parts of India, food is still eaten with hands....In cities, people dont do that anymore as they uses spoons/forks but in villages,etc people still eat with their hands...
 
I don't see what's wrong with the question.

If he had asked "Are chopsticks the greatest thing ever?", then he'd still be asking the same thing, wouldn't he? Responses would still include yes or no and reasons to back it up.
