Are cheap camcorders better than expensive webcams?

I'm looking for a high quality webcam, but instead of shelling ~$100 or so for one, I was wondering if its better to drop another hundred for a cheap camcorder that can also function as a webcam. Any suggestions/thoughts?

You can go with a webcam but you will have to do a lot of work to make it work.First you have to to look at some hardware compability lists to found out what web cams worksFlips are cheap I meant in comparison to spending more for a bigger digital camcorder.I know flips aren't $600.But seriously, you hit some good points.

Remember camcorders are designed to pre-record. They won't work as a webcam. Not without more worth than they're worth.
