Are car NAV System worth 2K??

What else can they do besides give directions and find stores? Are they worth it if one doesn't go out of the city much? Wouldn't a laptop + cell phone w/ BT be more useful to find stuff?

Laptop + Cellphone with BT ?
Right. You're gonna be playing around with the laptop while you're driving ? Looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Well...how much can you interact with an LCD while driving? Yes, NAV is more useful if you are driving on the freeway by yourself. However, you can always pull over and use the laptop 😀. Is it easy to find stuff? How do you input zip codes or street names in a NAV?

I usually input what I want to put in prior to driving.
A lot of the aftermarket Nav are touch screen. And it's pretty straight forward to use.

Mine uses a remote. Which I memorized where all the keys are 🙂 and Lets say I need to type in street name "Anderson" I just have to type AND and it'll pull up a list of Street names that start with "AND" and i can scroll down and find the street I want.

Is yours aftermarket? Mind giving me a link? thanks

laptop requires a copilot for use. gps is kewl, find the bank you need when u need atm where ever u are...if ur in a new place and have a hankering for mcdonalds..welll u can find that. doing shortcuts on the fly.. its just kewl. whether its worth 2k.. well it does help to give u a better idea of the areas where u drive.... and compared to sound systems.. its not all that much i guess.

Not to me.

But then again, I always carry maps and plan my route before going someplace I've never been to before. Plus I have an almost terrifying innate sense of direction and navigation. Seriously, it's spooky -- even to me. I can drive right to people's homes I've never been to before in towns I've never been to before with nothing more than an address (and at most a Yahoo map and simple directions, but I usually just glance at those). Came in real handy back in '95 to '97 when I was an outside sales rep and had to go to 4-6 new and different locations everyday across 30+ counties in 2 states (drove 100k+ miles per year).

But then again, who but someone who has that kind of job actually needs a NAV system? Most people just drive to work and back everyday and who needs NAV for that? Food for thought.

Bling bling I guess...

yes it's worth it! I wanted one but they couldn't find a car with it. Now I'm stuck with no navigation system and I suck at directions! If you drive up to a guy crying and moaning about not having a navigation system then that's probably me.

well if people have money to buy cars that have heated seats, expensive rims, spinners and other assorted semi useful junk, they have enough for gps😛

My uncle was showing us his GPS Navigation setup and my mom wanted to get one for her car since she does a lot of driving. We were looking up and it cost about $1000 for a decent after market gps system. As for me when you're broke a Map Book + Flashlight (when dark) will do just fine.

i'd say it is definitely worth it. have it and love it. use it whenever in an unfamiliar region. easier to find stuff. not hard to use. great for directions. beats paper maps hands down with automatic re-routing when you detour off the current route. i think its great to have if you can.

edit: best feature: no matter where you are, you just go to "go home" and voila... at least you'll never get lost again.

Actually, having thought about this a bit, it would have come in immensely useful when myself & my family visited Florida last year; we had a devil of a job trying to work out where we were going, where to turn, how to come off the freeway at the right exit, etc. That was a serious stress-job 🙂
