Are Canadian and US credit scores linked?

I know the same three companies operate in both countries and the scoring systems are very similar, if not identical. Based on that information, I'd assume that credit scores would be shared across countries. However, I was opening a checking account at RBC a few months ago, they informed me they didn't want to give me a credit card because I had no history of credit in Canada. This conversation implies, to me, that the systems aren't linked in any meaningful way.

If Joe Schmo destroys his credit in the United States and then moves to Canada, would his credit in Canada be adversely affected (or vice-versa)?

Yeah they do, SIN (social insurance number). Good point, though, it'd be pretty hard to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that John Smith of Canada is John Smith of the United States.
