Are businesses required to pay more for overtime?

In two days I've worked 29 hours, (16 hours one day, 13 the next) and the rest of the week looks like it's going to be about the same. Since I'm paid by the hour is there a required poing at which the business has to pay at a higher rate? I'm just wondering becaue the extra money would be handy.

I think its federal law that they have to pay time and a half after 40 hours... but I could easily be wrong

I find that sort of akward, it feels kind of like begging for more money if i went in and asked about it.

In most businesses O/T starts after 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week.
Isn't there someone in payroll or a coworker that you could check with to make sure?

that's just silly, I'd say you deserve it and should DEMAND it

I think I'll just wait till I get the check, the people there are honest and won't try and gyp me. It's not like I'm trying to plan around how much is coming from this check, it's just going into savings. I was just kind of interested because I was thinking how many freakin hours I was putting in. It's bad when you realize while you're headed out the door at work that you'll have to be back in less then 8 hours.

It would be bad demanding more money. This is kind of half internship, half summer job. My dad's president of the company (but he wouldn't hire me, but an engineer thought I would be helpful (and I really am). If I went in and demanded more cash I would feel like I'm trying to use my dad's position to leverage more money, which I would really like to avoid. I think most people there know I got the job because I have talent and work hard, but being the boss's son still causes some problems.

Been there, done that. Sucks even worse when you get told to drag your 350lbs uncle out of the bar on the other end of town and drive hime home...

I have yet to do that, so far the worst I've had to do is drive 7 hours straight (I took my dad's car for that and am getting 20 cents a mile on top of my pay so it's not coming out of my pocket) to get a replacement part. That wasn't bad, they paid for dinner and all the caffienated beverages I could chug.

Sounds like you have a direct route to the person who could be the most helpful in answering your question.

"Hey Dad, this deal pays overtime once I hit 40 hours right?"

The law is OT for any hours over 40 worked in a week. But in Arizona you can work 40 strait hours and its not OT, Most places anything over 8 hours in a day is OT.
<-- Pays a lot of OT

He wouldn't know, there's only 2 hourly workers there out of the maybe 40 that work there and he doesn't handle any of the pay stuff.

federal laws mandates you be paid OT for working over 40 hours, but some companies average that bi-weekly. (i.e, you could work 70 hours in one week and 10 the next but not be paid OT). Of course that may be due to specific state laws so consult the NY laws. I'd demand extra pay. :)

Well, off to bed for another day at work that starts in less then 8 hours. I'm still not tired because of the 2 liters of mountain dew coursing through my system, but a nice dose of nyquil will fix that.
