Are bow ties for dorks?

I always wanted to wear one ( as an instructor at the local college), but am not sure as to how it would be taken. Need to find out how to tie one too!

I worked for an architect who used to be a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins... He wore a bow tie and I would be hard pressed to call him a dork, at least within a 50 mile radius.

unless you're an excessively cool person, it will look dorky. If you want to look different though and you have some facial hair, you might be able to pull it off.

I had a prof who wore one and when he did he had an older style suit, so it looked ok.

If you get say an armani, it won't look good with the bow tie.
