Are Bosch dishwashers that quiet?

this is so off-topic, i know, but i was hoping to get some input from any Bosch dishwasher owners out there.

My wife and I just purchased a Bosch 9922 dishwasher from Sears. It's supposed to have a 48db rating, which I understand is supposed to be very quiet. The problem I'm having is that I read all sorts of reviews on epinons about how people can't even tell whether their Bosch dishwashers are on without placing their ear next to the dishwasher, but mine is not nearly that quiet. I can clearly hear it in the next room. It's not unbelievably loud, but it is easily heard, even by people that i talk to on the phone.

I don't know whether this is typical, or whether there is a problem with our particular dishwasher/installation. Can people chime in with honest thoughts as to the noise level of the Bosch dishwashers? Thanks so much for your help. I'm going bonkers over this problem (which in the grand scheme of things, shouldn't be a problem).

Did you buy a sears extended warranty? If so, they will send a tech out once a year to do a checkup. Call them and have them send someone out. It shouldn't cost you anythin.

Bosch makes dishwashers? Is this the same Bosch as in the OEM supplier for VW?

Yes, this is the same Bosch. Their dishwashers are of very good quality. My mother-in-law purchased one about 5 years ago for $850. It's an all stainless steel dishwasher. It's very nicely constructed and quite quiet.

If you suspect there's a problem with your dishwasher, you have a couple of options:

1) Borrow a Radio Shack sound level meter to test how loud it actually is.

2) Bring your proof to Sears that the dishwasher isn't performing as advertised.

Maybe, there's an issue where yours wasn't installed properly. Maybe, Bosch has "outsourced" their assembly of these dishwashers and the 3rd party is getting cheap on the parts and insulation that they're using. You paid for an outstanding dishwasher - if it's not performing in an outstanding manner, then it's time to get the issues resolved.

i didn't buy a Sears extended warranty, but it just got installed today. the installer had a heck of a time installing the thing. i just hope he didn't screw something up or take out some insulation to make the thing fit (if that was even possible). maybe my expectations were just too high on this one, but i don't understand how some people can say they can't tell if it's running it unless they put their ear to the machine or touch the machine. either they have trouble hearing in general, they have loud background noise in their homes, they're simply exaggerating, or i have a defective machine. what a nuisance. i think i may have to call Sears. i'd just hate to go through all the hassle (and i'm willing to be it will be a hassle) unless i was more sure something is wrong.

I have a Bosch, can't remember the model number off the top of my head but it was the high end model from last year. Can't even hear the damn thing......for about the first month I had it I coudln't believe it was realyl working so I kept opening it up just to make sure. They also make damn good gas stove tops. I would say that if yours is noisy then there is something odd going on.

One more thing. My mother-in-law has her's installed in a kitchen with terra cotta tile floors. These tiles bounce all kinds of sounds around. However, the Bosch is still very quiet in her kitchen.

sigh, i'm beginning to think something may indeed be wrong with the dishwasher. i can just picture sears refusing to do anything about this one. but i like wje's idea. maybe i can somehow get my hands on a sound meter of some sort to measure the noise? if shinerburke is saying he really can't hear his Bosch machine, then something must be wrong. i thought people on epinions were just exaggerating, but maybe not.

I didn't get it because it had a food trap you have to empty instead of a grinder that sends the food down the drain. There are a number of quiet models beside yours.

Maybe you can check what fan you have in your computer and what it's DB level is. Some of those Deltas are 47db if I remember right. That might make it possible to compare.

can't say yet. it's only been run empty since it was installed today. don't have any dirty dishes. i wonder if running it empty makes the dishwasher more noisey, since water gets sprayed directly on the inner walls? maybe not. i'll have to try when i get back home from work.

Yes, Bosch dishwashers are deathly quiet. My parents have one and I've already opened the door in mid-wash not knowing the darn thing was even on. And it DOES clean the dishes.

Some Bosch DWs are very quiet....their entry-level ones are fairly quiet.

If you want silent, and $$ is no object, get a Miele (sp?) Unbelievably quiet.

It turns out they (either Bosch, but more likely the installation person) scratched up one of the control buttons pretty badly on the top of the door. Sears is definitely getting a call. I just hope they can send a replacement dishwasher with an installer who actually knows what he/she is doing. According to my wife, the guy who installed it yesterday (apparently Sears contracts out installation to 3rd party local appliance stores/services) had to repeatedly bang on some metal part in order to get it installed.

Thanks for your helpful thoughts everyone. As always, the people in this forum are fantastic... :D

That's the problem with outfits like them.....installers who actually work for the company (like me ;)) tend to take a bit more pride in their work.

Sears should be pretty good with replacing the unit. Try contacting your salesman too. They make commission so the last thing they want is a returned item.
