Are black cars (exterior) really warmer than lighter colored cars (on the inside?)

I can understand if the interior were some dark color, it would be warmer inside.
But does the dark paint on the outside really transmit that heat to the inside to make a noticeable difference?

Well, I don't know for sure, but I know we laugh at people that come down to Texas with black leather interior...

Yes, it does. Dark windows also hold more heat inside the car than standard glass.

Darker cars would heat up faster because of high absorption coeffecient... However they would also cool down faster because of high emmisivity... Yes, it would make a noticable difference if you are driving only for a short time. In longer streches of driving it would not matter, nor would it for very short streches.

IMO some points in the article are wrong....

That article is junk. This entry in particular:

"Cracking the windows does nothing to prevent temperatures from rising in the car, although it may help minimize the risk of your windows being blown out from rising interior pressure."

Nonsense. First of all, if you have your windows cracked enough, the temperature inside the car shouldn't get too much hotter than the ambient temperature outside. If the windows are closed, then you get the total greenhouse effect. And windows being blown out from rising interior pressure? Give me a f'in break. Just how tightly sealed do you think a car is? Do you often suffocate while driving?

yep.. when i read "A car with a darker exterior color will get hotter on the inside somewhat faster that a light colored vehicle standing out in the Phoenix summer sun. After a while, they both approximate the same temperature: hot." , it gave away her scientific fact establishing skills :p

yeah.. my butt dyno tells me I have 800hp on my car..

Lmao.. i didnt read that far.. but wtf? the windows will NEVER explode! does she think cars are completely sealed or something? what a dumb xxxx(insert your own nasty word ;))

I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it myself, but it does happen.

A co-worker of mine walked to his car parked outside on the lot to find the glass in his hatch shattered.
It was a late 90's Integra with a black leather interior, parked during a hot summer day in the bright sun.
We all thought someone threw something at his car, but there was no sign of foul play.

My old car was hotter than hell, but it did have a dark gray interior.
My new car is silver and has a little lighter leather and is not as hot.

Why would that be? Anyways, dark (tinted) windows would also prevent some of the heat from getting in the car in the first place.

My black Miata with black cloth I don't bother to drive most of the time in the summer, too f'ing hot in it. My redish Explorer with grey cloth is more tolerable. Little black thing gets HOT.

I had a black car and you could fry an egg on it on the hottest days during summertime. My silver cars don't seem to feel as hot to the touch...or as hot inside.

Try a black car with a black interior and make it a hatchback (large rear glass adds to the greenhouse effect) = brutal heat buildup.

The glass probably shattered from another reason. No car is so airtight that the pressure from the sun warming the interior blows it out. It is was, you'd hear stories about people suffocating inside their car while they're driving.

More likely the glass broke from another reason.
