Before I learned how to build a computer I went with my sister to Best Buy to buy one for her.
This is how the conversation went.

SP- Ok now that you have selected A PC and a monitor your total is xxx.xx. I
Me- That not right.
SP- Yes it is. The PC is xx the monitor is xx and the 3 year warantee is 200.00.
Me- 3 year warantee?
SP- Yes I already added it in. You need it.
Me- No i don't
SP- yes you do.
Me- Uh no. I will not buy it.
SP-OK.

SP- you will also need this 30 printer cable.
Me- I have one already.
SP- If it is a cheap one your printer won't work nearly as well.
Me- whatever I dont want it.

SP- you will also need this 79.99 surge protector.
Me- I don't need it.
SP- Yes you do. You computer wont be protected with a regular surge protector. You need this to really protect your computer from frying.
ME- I'll take my chances.

SP- Go ahead and take your pc to the service counter. They will optimize it for you.
ME- WTF is that?
SP- They will optimize it and make it run better.
ME- Ok it's free right.
SP- No it's 20.00.

Me- BYE.

WTF is this crap. If I wasn't there my sister would of fallen for all this crap. The only think I can think of is that this guy is working on commision.

Just think of how many more people do fall for this crap. It's always interesting to hear what employess from BB, compusa, etc tell customers what they need in the store.

I can't imagine them not being on commission.

That's more than I make...unfortunately (or fortunately? :p) our local Best Buy isn't taking applications.

Personally, I would have a hard time selling their stuff...I'd have to work in the back as a tech, or something.

Good, knowledgeable sales people don't stay there long. I worked at a slow Circuit City and my hourly average over the summer was $18/hr. Christmas time was closer to $30. And the busier stores make alot more.

Figured as much.. I'd have a hard time trying to sell someone something they don't need, since I'm quite choosy on what I buy as well..

And damn, I wanna work at a Circuit City.. :Q

All Best Buy salespeople are non-commission. :)

A phenomenon that's occurred pretty much chain-wide is managers/supervisors relentlessly drilling in the importance of selling service plans on pretty much all products to the point where it's been more important to make a service plan sale than to keep the customer happy.

With margins in the electronics retail industry being razor-thin as it is, BB's awoken to the error of selling at all costs even without being on commission. The new chain-wide policy is to be the customer's Smart Friend - do what's best for the customer, but remember that BB is in the business of making money. Seems to be working fairly well up here in Canada thus far, since they're starting fresh. Wonder how it's going to go in the States though...it's a lot easier to maintain a bad rep than fix one up.

i used to work at bb (till i got fired :)) but like posted above, they are non commission. i was only a cashier there, but i had to sell the replacement plans and all that other "fun" stuff. i really didnt try to sell that much, because there was no difference in my paycheck if i sold $10 or $100. every opening and closing they had a store meeting talkin about how they can increase sales. every few months we also had meeting on how to sell service plans. it was a pretty easy job tho.

another reason they do this is that they make VERY LITTLE PROFIT from computers. they make their money by selling you accessories that are marked up to about 10 times what they pay for them. my old roomate who worked at Best Buy bought me a $25 USB cable for $3 w/ his discount because they can get that stuff at cost. that equals $22 profit for BestBuy. That's why they are pressured to add on whatever they can get you to buy.<br.
he didn't do anything wrong by offering you that stuff but he shouldn't of lied to you or pressured you. that's BS.

your totally right gambit, cables and $hit are the biggest markup. i bought a ide cable (orig like 7bucks) for a dollar. just about all car audio is half off too!
