Are ATI cards generally cheaper than Nvidia cards?

Looking around at video cards, it seems that the ATI performance competitive card of each Nvidia card is cheaper than the Nvidia card. Is this true, maybe not so much as for the low end, but for the midrange and high end, or am I missing something? Thanks.

Not at all.
It depends where you are looking to purchase your items and some of the specific models. Just look @ a x850xt pe - generally super overpriced.

The reason they are so underpriced right now is ATI is trying to remain competitive as they dont have their next gen part out. Additionally, they are probably trying to get rid of stock. Also, the R4xx series probably has higher yields than the NV4x series (not to mention some have a 110nm fab process).

Normally, video card prices are very competitive, however, with no cards to compete with Nvidia's latest, ATI has resorted to lowering prices until it can get its cards out the door.

I've just been looking on Newegg. I guess I'm not comparing the right cards?

EDIT: Kevin, I didn't see your post when I posted this. Anyway, now I understand. The only problem I have with buying an ATI card, even though I'd be saving money in terms of performance is I wouldn't be getting TEH POWRER OF THREEE!!1! But seriously, the problem I have with ATI cards is their lack of complete 1:1 pixel ratio scaling options, unlike Nvidia's cards.

You'd be hard-pressed to beat something like a X800 XL in terms of value for money.

ATI is doing that so they don't complete get screwed over. They want to bring people away from the 7800gtx before they can release the r520.

How long do you plan on keeping the card? if its for a good year or two, you'll want an Nvidia card (hopefully higher end, like 6800gt or up) because of Sm3.

Otherwise, the ATI cards are generally slightly cheaper or better priced.

Yes in Canada, Ati cards are much cheaper at this time, except the 6600gt seems pretty reasonable for a low/medium card. I am sure this will change when Ati sells out their backlog. All will be happy as prices go up for the new round of mid range hardware.

Its always changing. For like 1/2 a yr nv's cards were the ones to get. (6800gt/6600gt) But now it seems as if the x800xl and x800 have dropped into a price that you cant beat. If u need more power, nv's 7800gt is the one to get. Nothing compares to its price/performance combo atm and is expectedly part of the reason behind ati's pricing changes. It just depends when u buy and how much power u require.

Hmm I actually just ordered a x850xt for $330, the PE would have been $50 more expensive. No coupons or refurbished stuff... I think its pretty cheap...

In the UK video cards using an ATI gpu are usually more expensive than one using Nvidia.

Then you need to shop around.

X850XT/PE PCI-E $435; http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...ct_Code=190666&Category_Code=ATI-PCI-E

X850XT/PE AGP $400; http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...duct_Code=190668&Category_Code=ALL-ATI

Everysingle one of these, but one is under MSRP; http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi...xPrice=&SubCategory=48&Submit=Property

Then there is the X850XT PCI-E for $300, competition is with the 6800U. Its generally faster, and much cheaper; http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321942

X800XT/PE AGP for $250, competition is the 6800U. Its generally faster, and much cheaper; http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321907

Personally I think ATi's cards towards the highend are cheaper, with the cards they are supposed to compete with. The X800XL is cheaper than the 6800GT. The X800XT/PE, X850XT, and X850XT/PE are all cheaper than the 6800U in either AGP or PCI-E, and usually cheaper than the 6800GT too.

NV clearly has the $400-$500 PCI-E range in a firm grip with the 7800GT/X. The mid to high end AGP market is owned by ATi, a least to me.
