Has anyone else watched programs like The Universe, or other shows where they show the planets or talk about space ?

I was watching a show , the planets on the science channel, and they were talking about when the comet hit jupiter. They were replaying the room with all the astronomy buffs in it as the pictures of the comet impact appeared on the monitors.

They were all excited, clapping, jumping up and down. Shaking hands and generally acting like they had just won the lottery. Then they showed the public what they saw.
It was literally like looking at one small blob hitting a larger blob. No real details.
No color, just two blobs of pixels.

I just can't get excited about that.

Then there are other shots of things like some of the new planets they have found.
Their eyes light up like its christmas at seeing what is basically a blob of pixels.
"You can see right there, that point of light, and there it is !"

Maybe you just have to be an astronomer to understand.

Thats the thing , I do have interest in it.
I watch programs about space regularly.
I just can't get excited when I see blobs of light on a monitor.

For astronomers, watching Hale-Bopp impact Jupiter was like winning the lottery. The odds of seeing a comet impact like that in one's lifetime is very, very slim.

There are nerds for everything; they just don't necessarily call themselves nerds. I happen to think that anyone who gets together with friends, paints their face and body, and goes to a public venue to watch grown men throw a ball to each other is a nerd of an extreme caliber. But they'd object to that. They don't want to be a "sports nerd." They prefer to call themselves a "fan." Whatever, you're a nerd. Deal with it.

Astronomers are just a different sort of nerd. To you or I a low resolution video of two blobs colliding is nothing special. But to astronomers, it represents something that we will probably never see again. They aren't seeing two blobs; they are seeing a cataclysmic event, a large comet colliding with the largest planet in our solar system. They can visualize it in their minds and it is awesome. The fact that we can record such an event is just icing on the cake.

I was gonna say, I don't remember Hale-Bopp hitting Jupiter... Maybe those Heaven's Gaters got their wish to see God! And if Jupiter is God, that means the Romans were right all along! By Jove, I think I'm on to something here!

But alas, it was some worthless atheist comet that hit Jupiter. Fuck Shoemaker Levy 9.

I know that clip. The one woman at the front and center was especially nerdy in her excitement.

However, it was an important event because:
- it was the first time such an impact had ever been witnessed,
- such an impact probably won't happen again anytime soon,
- and the comet SL9 hit Jupiter more or less exactly as predicted.

This made me laugh hard enough that my wife came to see what the big deal was.

When you explained it to her, did she shake her head, and mutter "Nerd" under her breath as she walked out of the room?

That's passion from people that went on to do what they've always dreamt of doing.

.....unlike most ambitious sellouts who narrow-mindedly take up law and quickly end up hating every second of their empty/souless lives.
