Are any of these Final Fantasies recommended?

The Humble Bundle currently has 5 Final Fantasy games on sale. Growing up I loved Final Fantasy 6 and 7. I liked the trading card game in FF8, but wasn't a big fan of the game otherwise. That was the last FF game I played.

Should I buy any of these games? Any idea if the "PC updated" versions of the older games are good?

FF4 (known as ff2 US version), was my favorite ff game on the nintendo. The new version shown here with cgi I haven't played but I'm tempted to grab it. If you are going to grab any of them make it this one.

You may wanna reconsider.

The 3D version of final fantasy 4 changes some game mechanics, and its even tougher than the SNES japanese FF4.

They added an Augment system which is basically a messed up version of Materia. Its a pain to arrange what you want, you'd have to plan everything before you even start the game. If you mess up, you miss good Augments until you win and start another game again. And if you ignore the Augments entirely, the game is a little too tough.

Also theres some minor annoyances like you cant use an equipped weapon as an item (Dancing Dagger, Flame Rod) unless you waste a good command slot in the status screen. And if you were to change over to an Ice Rod, you would not be able to use it at all (weapon or item) until the battle was over and you go back & change the command again.

The good news is its easier to control than the Android port and they included the high quality FMV from the DS version.
Downside is battles are limited to 15 FPS. Thats because its actually a remake of the Android version and not the DS version.

I still think the 2D versions are better for gameplay, either the translated SNES ROM, or the GBA cartridge.

Oh, FF7 and FF8 are pretty much exactly like the Playstation releases aside from slightly lower quality video.

HOWEVER, the battles look much better as you can render up to 1920x1200. And of course you could go to your NVIDIA settings and enhance the AA and AF if you liked.

Also the save game files are exactly the same as the original Win98 versions and you could copy them over, if you still had them. (Which I do, amazingly.)

Oh, amazon has USB controllers too.

It works fine in Windows.

I tried FF4 on an SNES emulator and I swear I cannot figure out what people see in this game. The pacing of the story is just awful and the characters and dialogue just feel rushed and false. The game is loaded with platitudes of love and friendship and the like that just seem to come from nowhere or have no development. It feels really melodramatic to me.

Combat isn't bad and getting the airship and exploring the world is pretty cool at least. But the frequently rotating cast and somewhat ridiculous series of events really kept me from getting 'into' it very much. I think I'm about halfway through the game but can't say I recall where to go or what to do at this point - and iirc there's no journal or anything like that to help get back into it.

It's probably somewhat a product of the era as I felt the same way about a lot of story telling from the SNES era (Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana all kind of share the same flaws to some extent imo) and for it's time I could see a lot of what it does being very well received. But I don't necessarily think it holds up very well relative to some of the more involved and better written stories in games we have today.

I can get that if you didn't play it back then it doesn't have the nostagia, but it was new for the time the first of its kind, (although I think FF3(6) is better overall and holds up well), but I would ask what RPG story you think is better these days, because they all are pretty much rehashed love stories just with better graphics and too much CGI.

But since we're on PC, mods exist to replace the music with either playstation quality or orchestral versions. I modded my FF8, and it's glorious.

Never liked Final Fantasy. Random battles and every single Jap gaming cliche don't make for a fun time.

It was very advanced in 1991. Well, computer games were better in terms of story but not many people were playing them back then.

They arent "flawed". They are young.

To me, FF2 is the best ever (the SNES one--I have no idea what the japan number is. it was called FF2 here in the US< so that's what it is, goddamnit!)

I was thinking about grabbing this on the steam sale--but several of the reviews talk about it being a port of a port of a port from a mobile version....that just sounds awful. I played though that game a dozen times or more back in the day. I'm not sure if I would like the new visuals--look like the emo style the franchise took on so recently.

Plus, if the port really is that bad, I dunno.

I'd only play the SNES version. I played through every single one of those games as a kid and loved them.

I think the OP may not like them much if he didn't play that style of game growing up. But if you're a huge jRPG fan of course you'll enjoy this stuff. I played through so many of these style of games it blends together :(. The reason I bought the PSP was because it could be hacked and I could continue to play these games on the go.

My opinion, YMMV:

Worth buying: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12
Don't bother: 2, 3
DANGER WILL ROBINSON: 8. Should have been called Final Fantay 90210.

I don't think 8 was that bad. The story is not any more or less "bad" than the other games in the series. The protagonist talks about as much as Cloud, and actually evolves emotionally, contrary to what a lot of people say.

The only valid complaint I could see was the magic system, but if you wanted to use magic, you'd figure out where to junction it so that it wouldn't affect your character too harshly.

But to each their own. A lot more people like 13 than I figured. I loathe that game.

I've tried playing FF3 (the Japanese 3) on Steam, and it's just massively uninteresting. I tried FF8 when it came out and couldn't get past the first disc.
