Are all Xbox 360's this way?

I'm a PC gamer who hasn't really played Xbox360 for any long period of time. Today I decided to pick up an Arcade (ordered the 20gb HD too) with Gears of War II and Fable II, two games that really caught my eye and aren't available on PC. So I set everything up; Xbox horizontal in a wide uncluttered area, setup XBL, d/l XNE, system updates, the whole nine.

I decide to play GoWII and not ten minutes into the game I get a "The Disc is Unreadable, please remove the disc and clean with a soft cloth" error message. I literally just bought a brand new Xbox360 and a brand new copy of GoWII taken directly out of its case and into the Xbox360 and I get this message. I end up getting these errors about once every 15 to 30 minutes during the game, making it really unplayable...

I got frustrated with GoWII and then proceeded to play Fable II and was happy to see that there was a patch update for it as well. Now... the game freezes on loading screens. I have read that Fable II does have long loading screens, but does it really take 10 minutes to load? The last freeze drove me to write this post, and even as I write all of this, it's either still loading or it froze.

Is this normal behavior for an Xbox 360 and I just need to get used to it? Or is there something possibly wrong with it and I should just return it to Best Buy for another one?

If it makes any difference my lot number was 831 and Mfr date was 8/10/2008 or something close to that.

Cliffs:
-Pick up an Xbox 360 Arcade earlier today
-Get a "unreadable disc" error playing a brand new copy of GoWII on a brand new Xbox360 10 minutes into the game
-Freezing during Fable II loading screens
-Is this the nature of Xbox 360's or should I return for a new one?

Take it back and exchange it. You've obviously got a bad DVD drive.

Thanks guys, taking it back tomorrow. Maybe I should demand a Pro for my troubles ;)

Hah, good luck with that :) But yeah, definitely not a great start to your experience. Hopefully you get a quality replacement as it's a great console.

Do the newer xbox360's still carve a picture of a donut onto your DVDs if you breath to heavily near the machine, or have they fixed that?

That's never been the case. Either you have a defective DVD, defective drive, or you did something dumb like tilt your 360 over while it was being used.

Yes...definately take it back and get another. I was a long time PC gamer and got my Xbox 360 elite last Oct. I have had zero issues with it. Matter of fact, I barely play anything on my PC anymore. All my gaming is on my 360 now.

No there was definitely a batch of bad drives on some launch consoles that did it without movement. It's been fixed for a while though, and it wasn't THAT widespread of a problem.

Yeah, same for me. I was thinking about it just last night and trying to decide if it was a little sad.
