Are all USB 3.0 hubs made equal in terms of performance?

I just got an Intel H81 motherboard which has only 2 USB 3.0 ports and would like to have more. Does the brand and chipset of the hub matter? I see there are many hubs on amazon but would not like to base my decision on price. Performance of the hub is the most important criteria.

Or should I skip the idea of a hub and just USB 3.0 PCI cards?

Yes but IMO the reliability is the most important thing, especially if you're transferring data. I would stick with a brand name
