Subject: s2syed Vulnerable file

s2syed,

Problem:
The following file(s) are vulnerable since they have write permission for others set.
This means anybody can change the content of those files.

Solution:
Remove the write bit on those files; it's not needed or risk having your account suspended.

Am I imagining the attitude or is this for real? This is assholey e-mail #2 from this guy, the first one was about me setting up the permissions for .forward incorrectly and causing corrupted e-mails - I should "learn how to do things properly." Hey dumbass, how about I properly rearrange your face? Friggin' power-tripping nerd.

Funny, when I was a Unix sysadmin I used to ask, "are all Unix users assholes or what". :)

your account should be suspended and you should be incarcerated at a "re-education camp" until you learn to set that write bit.

I think you need a L.A.R.

Apparently the L.A.R.T. is too far away from the Admin at the moment, or he's reading something funny on FARK and can't be bothered.

Heh, anyone asked me to chmod their files for them would get a "chmod -R 000 *" in their home folder. It ain't his job...

heheh, actually I'm pretty good about that considering I do 95% of my coding in the *nix environment. That particular file was one I had unzipped after downloading from a buddy, never bothered to check any permissions.

Keep on like that and you'll have a BOFH on you ;)

But, seriously, he's looking out for the security of his server. From his point of view, it's not worth having his server cracked into because of some user's permissions. See it as a learning experience.

Well, not ALL UNIX admins are assholes. I for one think that I'm a fairly nice person. :D

Anyway, I would have dropped the whole "risk having your account suspended" BS, and would have included instructions on how to safely chmod your files.

Of course, if you decided to be a jerk and ignore my note, I would have then sent out a nastier note threatening to lock out your account.

I think that could have been worded a lot better, considering it was a single file acting as a tiny shell script (to recompile and run a program) with 777 permissions on it, not an entire directory or anything like that. Not to mention this was my first offence and first warning about the issue.

Whatever happened to courtesy? This is at an university, so this guy is likely a fellow student. I'm going to seek out and have a little talk with this guy come Friday about courtesy.

Lol,Sully, they're just blunt and to the point be glad he emailed you and didn't just decide you were a clueless dolt and chmod himself... that would worry me more than the email.

Well for what it's worth, it sounds like you're the asshole. The guy's just doing he job, and he wasn't even being rude, which i think deserves recognition when coming from someone who deals with idiots all day long.

I don't see where the unix admin is being rude to you. He tells you your problem. He tells you WHY it's a problem. He tells you how to fix it. And he tells you that if you don't, it's a violation of your TOS to use the school's resources and you will lose your acct.

If it were me, I'd throw the file into a jailed folder and contact you that I had your file, if you need it, contact me and I would teach you chmod. You would not like me one bit. My CTO would email me stacks and stacks of msgs saying I needed to be nicer, but no one ever questioned my methods were effective and the damn machine ran better when I was around.

 He is doing his job, but the threat against my account was unneeded, and I don't CARE that he deals with idiots all day long. That's his damn job, to look after the system. Now if he can't do that with a minimum of civility, then we have an issue.
