Are all LED TVs this bad with ghosting/smearing?

I just brought this home today, and am shocked at how much ghosting/smearing/motion blur it has. I never expected such a thing to be an issue in this day and age... it looks like I'm looking at the first PSP screen all over again :( The first thing I tried was Fallout: New Vegas on the PS3 and it looked horrendous. The dark atmosphere turned into a blurry mess whenever I turned.

So a few questions here while I ponder what to do when I return it:
-Do all LED TVs suffer from such a thing? I mean all that's different is the backlight on these things right? They're still LCDs so should be up to par with what LCDs are capable of... right?
-Is there any "warm up period" for these TVs? It sounds stupid, but I'm just trying to figure out why such a god awful problem is seemingly going unnoticed by everyone buying the TV. Maybe it just needs some hours through it :awe:

I've tried different settings on the TV and nothing seemed to make much difference with the blurring problem. I've upgraded from an older, store brand (Dynex) 32" 720p TV which didn't even seem to do it this bad.

It does, apparently. That's something I didn't try, but I just checked and it didn't fix a thing.

LED is just a backlight, the panel tech is what matters for speed and quality. i'm surprised they didnt phase out the 60hz panel and instead salvage old tech slapping led backlight on it, i guess its easier to convert old panel/production lines to led? no idea. in any case the panel is probably very low end, but they've managed to charge the led premium for it:p

Damn... Best Buy has me right where they want me. I won't return this till after today, which will make me look like a jackass who just wanted to buy a tv and return it as soon as the superbowl was over. I'm sure they'll charge a hefty restocking fee as well =\

I though Best Buy got rid of their restocking fee, but either way I'm sure they're used post-Superbowl returns. Having an actual excuse should only help.

As for your problemm, it might be that your old Dynex TV used a cheap TN panel, whose one main advantage is less ghosting. You might find that you won't be happy with any brand name TV, where IPS panels are pretty standard. LCD TVs do try to compenstate for ghosting through various motion processing techniques. Instead using a game mode, which usually turns things like that off, you can doing the opposite and try turning on various processing options. Unfortunately they don't always work well with games and cause worse artifacts like studdering. They'll also only increase input lag. The 120HZ TVs are designed to handle motion problems better, but they're not usually recommended for gaming because of the lag.

I have tried the various processing options, and nothing really makes much difference. I'm willing to put up with some input lag if it got rid of some of this blurring. I can see it in most things, but it's particularly bad in dark scenes without much color change. When I bought this I was torn between this an a 120hz LCD. Guess I should have went with that instead. Normally I would think I'm just being picky, but I know what my no-name 4year old set can do so it shouldn't be worse in any aspect.

It's posts like this that keep pushing me towards a Plasma. I'm coming from a 1080i CRT TV. And I haven't made the purchase yet, but I'm thinking Plasma for sure now.

Take it back and get a Plasma.

I probably will. Are their burn-in issues pretty much gone? Panasonic seems to have several models at BB in the same price and size range, so I'll probably go with them.

I've seen a more recent model have image retention show up pretty fast. It goes away quickly, though, so I don't know if that would be an issue for you.

If it's temporary I'm not too worried about it. I don't plan on using it with a PC or anything, but a lot of games have a fairly static HUD or GUI that I'd be worried about. It's rare for me to play more than ~2 hours of the same thing though.

Bought a Panasonic S2 at the beginning of December. I didnt do any of the burn in prevention / image retention recommended at AVS forums. I havent noticed any from use for Dish TV, Xbox360 or movies.

Its been a great tv and saved some $$ that was quickly used for a mount and other various items.

i just moved from lcd (westy 42W2) to LG 60PX950 - awesome for superbowl btw -size counts. and i have no idea what image retention is. i leave things sitting around. there is a setting called orbiter and i guess it shifts the pixels around every once in a while.

but no - IR - nada - nothing. the 3D requires faster phosphor to prevent ghosting. this faster phosphor can't burn as quickly since it has a quick on/off. Conversely that which causes IR also can create a brighter image if you think about it.

plasma is really very similar to a TV. so tv to plasma is most natural.

LCD? I need the resolution 30" ZR30W 2560x1600 and color (LP2480ZX) super insane reproduction 30bit screens. otherwise i might consider plasma in a dark lair.

plasma's big bad secret is the anti-glare is so bad. SO BAD. the best ANTI-GLARE (VT30/VT25) is worst than the junkiest no-name LCD. so you gotta really believe the brightness will overcome the glare. if you rock plasma in the daylight on your beach patio you will be sad. for most everyone else who works all day and comes home and watches tv in the nightfall - no biggie.

This

My Plasma (cheap Vizio circa 2007) shows very little image retention (even when running the PC for an hour or so) and no burn it at all.

As far as glare, the only time I have a problem is when the blinds are open and the sun is shining in directly on the screen. Then again, any TV would have a problem with the sun shining directly on it.

Even in the evening with a lap across from the TV, I only see the lamp in the TV during the totally black screens between commercials.

A plasma won't have any worse of a glare issue than a flat screen CRT TV in the same room.

Your link was broken for me... but I found the sku in your link so hopefully this works: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...9343&cp=1&lp=1

Anyway, I think I'm going to get a panasonic plasma when I return this. From what I hear they're the best on the plasma side:

Not looking forward to trying to fit all the other TV shit back in the box first :(

TVs are one of the few things I won't buy online. Unless the price is substantially better, it's not worth dealing with an apartment delivery. And if I had to return it (like I would if I bought my current TV online) it'd be a HUGE pain in the ass.

i will only purchase online from someone that has a local B&M store. i ordered my TV (LN52A750) from Circuit City online (About $400 cheaper than instore) and had it delivered from the local CC. Worked out great. Of course there is no CC anymore...so...but the TV is out of warranty anyway...

I don't game much at all on my 3 year old Samsung plasma, but the couple of PS3 games I did actually play I would sometimes put 4+ straight hours on them with no lasting effects. I'd get some minor IR from the hud that you could notice on a black screen (pretty much when switching input sources back) but after a few minutes of regular TV viewing it would be completely gone (would check on a black screen again.) Anyone else I know with an HDTV has an LCD, and one person with a DLP. I much prefer watching my own TV.

I'd agree that glare is probably plasma biggest "glaring" issue, but as stated it's no worse than the old CRT's were. Actually since it's a flat panel it's a bit easier to avoid it, but then again I like watching TV in minimal light with some back lighting behind the TV, so it's a non-issue for me.

Got the plasma today, and it's pretty nice. I can see how glare may be an issue, but it's only really an issue if I keep the room light on and the TV brightness low. Either way it's better than the blurry mess I was seeing on that LED TV. It really was quite terrible for a modern set.

Nice to hear. I'd like a Plasma myself to replace my CRT TV, but unless I find a Sale a 1080p Plasma is just too much for my budget.
