Are all i7-3635qm processors defective?

No.

But when you test laptops you also test vastly different configurations. Hence also getting different results.

Not to mention its a terrible site in terms of benchmark.

In the same system, the 3635QM will be faster.

Inadequate cooling could result in varying results.

A processor with higher clock speed could be producing enough heat to make it throtle down, while the slower processor could run in higher speed mode for longer periods.

Ram configuration could affect benchmark results.

To get a good comparison, you would need to test both processors in the exact same laptop, while monitoring temperatures to make sure there is no overheating.

I've never found another site like Passmark, where so many different CPUs are listed in a head-to-head competition. There are many hundreds of CPUs that have run the same test listed. Sure it has its limitations, but I don't think there is anything else quite like it.

I have often wondered why some presumably faster CPUs post better results than slower ones. Throttling in real-life scenarios may indeed come into play. Another thing to consider is sample size, one sample may safely be considered an outlier if it doesn't jive with results of similar CPUs; larger samples generally inspire more confidence.

It looks like on the passmark website, the sample size was 33, which is a small but not a tiny sample size.
