Are all brand of wireless equipment compatible

😕
I have a linksys wireless G with speedbooster, (the older original).
I need an adapter for a desktop PC.
1. Is any brand compatible, (netgear seems to have a good price)?
2. is one adapter type better than another, like
a internally mounted pci card versus an external usb adapter?

I'm just trying to save money but I don't want to have connectivity issues.

Thanks

Welcome to AT network forum.

They are on the standard 802.11b/g level. I.e. 11Mb/sec. and 54Mb/sec.

All the other modes, like Speed Booster, SuperG, Turbo, MIMO, etc. are none standard chipset additions, and are supported within the same manufacturer matching hardware.
Look at this page there is additional info, http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Hardware.html

AFAIK, the best value to the price is this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833162173

The type of Wireless Card depends on how the computer is situated.
PCI Wireless Client Card ends up been stuck behind the computer's case, resultant in obstructed transmission and poor performance. USB is connected to the Port with 2-3' cable allowing the Antenna to be placed above the System for better Transmission.

However, a PCI card is a good choice if it equipped with a Removable Antenna.
In such case you can you can fit a good External Antenna with a short coax wire that let you place the Antenna above the system and would provide much better wireless signal.

It seems that I missed the "Have" in the first line of your post.

As is, in order to benefit from the Speed Booster extra Speed you need the matching Linksys card.

You can flash the Router with 3rd party software and Boost the output as well.

So, What is this 3rd party software u speak of?

And if I don't care to take advantage of speedbooster, will netgear, d-link, or buffulo work with my linksys?

I guess I just want to get a good connection, speed is not important. My dell Axim PDA connects and lord knows what it uses!
