I'm embarrased that I don't know this, but I was wondering if the color of the AGP slot (port) was a function of the AGP-type (1x, 2x, etc.)?

no the colour is just to distinguish the port from a pci one!

All the AGP slots I have ever seen are brown in colour, regardless of specification: AGP1X, AGP2X, AGP4X, AGP Pro.

Thanks Andy. I was curious about that because it seemed to me that it would be a good idea for mobo mfrs to establish a std. 'color-coding scheme' to identify the various AGP-types (spec.).
