Are all AC to USB adapters compatible?

I have an iPhone and a Nook and both came with a wall adapter w/ a USB port to plug in the included USB cable. All I want is confirmation that I could plug any USB powered device into these without worry.

Yes, some just put out more power than others, so your device may take longer to charge if the adapter isn't rated as high as the original one.

Yes. Make sure to check the output current. I've seen some AC adapters that only pump out 300 mA, which for some phones during use is not enough to charge the phone. The USB standard is 500mA.

related question -- i plugged my drained PS3 controller into my laptop but the lights just flashed on the controller. It would not turn on. When I plug the drained controller into the PS3 I can turn it on and use it while it's charging.

Is this because the laptop was providing too low a current to charge the controller while it was in use? I'm also not sure if the controller was even charging at all from the laptop.

Since they don't all output the same current, it's not possible to know if all devices can safely tolerate voltage from these adapters...
